15th January: Destination Out! + Challenger/Brice/Ibbetson

After a most enjoyable and encouraging 'first gig of the year', we continue with two relatively new groups that both incorporate free improvisation into larger forms of intriguing composition. Check it out:

Destination Out!

Dee Byrne - Alto Saxophone
Ian Bumstead - Tenor Sax/Bass Clarinet
Paul Baxter - Double Bass
Corrie Dick - Drums

Destination Out! This quartet, run by bassist/composer Paul Baxter, explores the cosmos through the Berne and Ornette-esque compositions penned by the bassist and leader who has attempted to combine the worlds of Free-Improv and Through Composition in an accessible and melodic format.

Baxter, currently in his final year at Trinity, has been noted for his work with his trio 'Eyes Shut Tight' and his big band 'The Give A Little Love Jazz Orchestra' for which he was in receipt of 2012 'Jazz Yorkshire Composer/ Arranger of the Year' and nominated for the Serious 'Take 5 - Edition VII'.

Tom Challenger - Tenor Saxophone
Olie Brice - Double Bass
Peter Ibbetson - Drums

A meeting of a new trio featuring SE Collective member Peter Ibbetson. He is joined by Loop Collective Saxophonist Tom Challenger who plays with the likes of Outhouse, Red Snapper and Fofoulah. Also joined by double bassist Olie Brice who has performed with Ken Vandermark, Jeff Williams, Tony Marsh and Ingrid Laubrock.

Utilizing the freedom of this harmony-less group, the trio interweave melody and rhythm using compositions from all three as starting points. Heavily influenced by improvised atonality of artists such as Tim Berne, and a more contemplative sound which relies on heavy interaction and communication through the music.
