26th February: Brass Mask & Sam Bullard's 'People & Places'

This upcoming Tuesday we have a double delight, presenting music from SE Collective member Sam Bullard, as well as Loop collective stalwart Tom Challenger.

Tom Challenger's 'Brass Mask'

Brass Mask is a brand new horns and percussion only octet. A recently written a set of material reveals a wide range of influences, ranging from the marching band tradition of New Orleans, to Contemporary Jazz writing, to Hip Hop to it’s utilisation of Improv.
It also holds an exciting Line-up:
Tom Challenger (Tenor Saxophone, Alto Clarinet)
Shabaka Hutchings (Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet)
George Crowley (Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet)
Alex Bonney (Trumpet)
Rory Simmons (Trumpet)
Nat Cross (Trombone)
Theon Cross (Tuba)
John Blease (Percussion)

Sam Bullard's 'People & Places'

Sam Bullard - woodwinds
Will Gibson - woodwinds
George Hogg - trumpet
Tom White - trombone
Matt Ridley – double bass
John Blease – drum kit

Sam and the band take you on an exciting and interesting tour of real and fictional people and places. Get ready to be transported to the inspiring dramatic cliff top landscape of ‘Treyarnon Bay’ in Cornwall, and take a waltz with the happy-go-lucky protagonist of a Mary Ann Shaffer novel in ‘Juliet’s Dance’.Join them on an intriguing night out with the ‘Cockermouth Girls’, and nurse your hangover with an afternoon of lower league football at the ‘Weston Homes Community Stadium’!
‘People and Places’ is a flexible ensemble which morphs from classical quartet to improvising jazz trio and jazz sextet with consummate ease. Chorales contrast with free improvisations, latin grooves contrast with driving swing and brooding ballads.
As a musician known for his exceptional facility, versatility, eclectic tastes and humour, Sam will lead you through an engaging and entertaining concert of original music and improvisation.

COMING SOON - TUESDAY 5TH MARCH - 'PARTIKEL' & 'THE TWELVEHEADS'

SE Collective drummer/composer Peter Ibbetson will be performing with his new quartet 'The Twelveheads', featuring saxophonists Alam Nathoo and Tom Challenger, as well as bassist Tom Farmer. This gig will also be a live recording for the group. Check out a preview on the LondonJazz blog here.

Also joining for what looks to be a very exciting evening are star trio 'Partikel' featuring Duncan Eagles on saxes, Max Luthert on bass and Eric Ford on drums.
