Tuesday 23rd July: Zhenya Strigalev's Uranium X-tet

It was absolutely terrific to see the Amersham absolutely packed with Jazz revelers this week, crisp lagers in hand, enjoying the Jon Desbruslais Quintet and Jim Rattigan’s new Reverberance project, thanks to all who made it such a special night!

Next up we have the enigmatic virtuoso saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev and his Uranium X-tet

Uranium X-tet

Possessing fire, grace and edgy attitude alto saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev is a young virtuoso forging an increasingly high profile musical presence. Hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia, and graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2007, he has cut a dynamic path between the jazz scenes of New York and London, working with some of today’s most forward thinking creative musicians. These include Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave, 'Foley' McCreary, William Parker, Hamid Drake and Robert Mitchell, among others.

Now with four solo albums under his belt, Zhenya has reached a new level of artistic maturity on his latest album Smiling Organizm, featuring Liam Noble, Larry Grenadier, Tim Lefebvre and Eric Harland, which was released last year.

Uranium Quartet is an exciting new project led by alto saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev building on his strong relationship with bassist Mark Lewandowski and drummer Ben Brown. Mixing new and original tunes, rhythms and sounds, the quartet will take you on unexpected journeys through the jazz tradition and beyond…

“As ever expect dazzling technical skills, avant-garde deconstruction of standards, with and just a hint of chaos.” Whatson.London

“[Smiling Organizm] has all the knife-edge momentum and skilled improvisatory abandon of its leader… chock-full of playful twists and turns, Strigalev’s UK debut is what you might call a real cliche-free ride.”
Jazzwise Magazine

Check out Zhenya’s website for more information, see you all down at the Amersham from 8.30 next Tuesday!
