Tuesday the 9th of April: The Alex Merritt Quartet

Alex Merritt – Tenor Saxophone
John Turville – Piano
Sam Lasserson – Bass
Jeff Williams – Drums

The Amersham Arms enjoyed yet another cracking double bill this week with new music from Andre Canniere's Freeway following on from Alam Nathoo and Tom Hewson – who presented music from the new duo EP Aubade. For those of you who missed it, the EP is available to download and comes highly recommended:

Next Tuesday the SECollective are very pleased to be welcoming back Alex Merritt’s terrific quartet; featuring three of London’s finest young improvisers alongside US drumming icon Jeff Williams.

The Alex Merritt Quartet play all original compositions by Alex drawing upon diverse influences. Prominent in the mix is the influence of contemporary classical music – composers such as Bartok, Messiaen and Ligeti. Another big influence on the music is the carnatic music of southern India as well as jazz influences from the Tristano school, Jimmy Giuffre and many others. It’s an interesting hybrid music which leads to a very exciting band dynamic and a fresh springboard for improvisation.

You can check out some live recordings of Alex via his website:

Looking forward to seeing you down at the Amersham!
