One year ago a few like-minded musicians came together in an area where many of us lived, hung-out, and commuted but rarely got to see many quality gigs. The idea was to collectively curate weekly gigs at a venue where people could turn up week after week in the knowledge that the music would be fresh and exciting with a bias towards exciting improvisation and original composition.
We chose the Amersham Arms in New Cross because it had a rich and varied history of supporting live music and the manager Andy was trusting enough to let twelve jazz musicians with only a basic grasp of grammar and counting operate a weekly live music venue. A refreshingly democratic operation then ensued and we proceeded to get in touch with musicians from the jazz and contemporary music scene in London and beyond.
Over the 12 months we've been running we have entertained audiences with nights featuring among others:
Empirical, MA, Pete Wareham, Grooveyard, Sons Of Kemet, Jeff Williams, Martin Speake, MAP, Ivo Neame Large Ensemble, Examples Of Twelves, Acrobat, Bad Ass Brass, Mike Garrick Orchestra, Groove Therapy, Aquarium, Tilt Shift, Matt Ridley Trio, Tangent, Flash Mob, Jeff Spencer, Dagda Quartet, Saltwater Samurai, T
housand Kings, Fringe Magnetic, Draw By Four, Identity Parade, Monocled Man, Tom White Septet, Pseudonym, Sam Bullard Quartet, Peter Ehwald, Mick Foster, Gareth Locrane Big Band... there's plenty more!
Tonight we're getting together and playing original music by the Collective's members in two sextets. Expect some delicious eclecticism and intriguing interplay!
