30th October 2012: Greg Heath Quartet

Greg Heath - tenor saxophone

Bill Mudge - Piano
Nick Kacal - bass
Laurence Lowe - drums

This week the SECollective look forward to welcoming The Greg Heath Quartet to the Amersham Arms. Featuring drumming legend Laurie Lowe and the SEcollective’s own Bill Mudge on piano, Greg’s quartet will be playing their own brand of original and progressive modern jazz within the classic tenor-and-rhythm format.

His 2009 Debut Release Fact & Fiction comes recommended by Jazz UK as one to buy with confidence “…there’s a strong Coltrane-circa-1961 influence here and as well as Heath’s fire-starting tenor the CD captures pianist John Donaldson at his most eloquent” (Duncan Heining – Jazz UK).

You can check it out via Greg’s Myspace here:

Originally from New Zealand, Greg studied at the NSW Conservatorium in Sydney under the tutorage of world renowned brass virtuoso James Morrison and Australian sax and woodwind legend Don Burrows. Resident in the UK since 1989, Greg has toured and recorded as a sideman with a diverse range of artists both in the Jazz and Pop idioms including prominent UK jazz artists such as: Jim Mullen, John Etheridge, The Meier Group and Coup d’Etat. Popular music artists include: Terence Trent D’Arby, Van Morrison, Stereo MC’s, Jimmy Nail and Hamish Stewart, to name but a few. Greg is also a member of the “All Stars Collective” comprising some of Britain’s finest touring and session musicians.

Further praise for Fact & Fiction comes from Jazzwise magazine’s Selwyn Harris:

“Heath has a drive and sonic intensity that encourages further listening ... the Jazz here is undeniably well executed and listenable”
