A welcoming crowd enjoyed the
contemporary sound-world of Paul Riley’s quintet this week, next up we have a
wonderfully contrasting double-bill for your delectation.

Metamorphic are a contemporary
song-based jazz/folk sextet. Their second album, Coalescence, was released on
the F-ire label in June, and has already garnered much critical acclaim; the
album has received 4 stars from John Fordham in the Guardian: 'an imposing
talent'; 4 stars from Brian Morton in Jazz Journal: 'utterly remarkable music':
and 4 stars in Jazzwise, with reviewer Peter Quinn calling it ‘an ear-catching
and compelling collection’. Jez Nelson, Max Reinhardt and Jamie Cullum have
given the album airplay on their respective BBC radio shows. Metamorphic were
also shortlisted to play at the Manchester Jazz Festival in July on the BBC
Introducing stage; the gig was broadcast on Jazz on 3 in August, with Jez
Nelson pronouncing after the gig, 'amazingly original compositions; I don't

South London based Jazz guitarist Joseph
Howell leads his new quartet through a complex set of original music. Featuring
SE Collective Saxophonist Ian Bumstead, Bassist Marcus Penrose and Drummer
Peter Ibbetson, expect a vitriolic foray into the world of modern Post-Bop.
